Foster the People - Pumped up Kicks

It isn’t very typical of tuneage to feature a song from the Billboard charts but Foster the People isn’t a typical band. Sources say their emergences into fame is thanks to websites like Hype Machine, which, granted, has helped the trio keep a pretty level head about their meteoric year. It also doesn’t hurt the band members grew up doing a lot of charity, like building homes in Haiti and helping orphanages in Mexico.

Still, despite their do-gooder attitude, Foster the People further prove the point that with a catchy, upbeat sound (bonus points if whistling is included), you can pretty much write any sort of lyrics you like. And I can’t help that I love the idea of lyrics being completely misunderstood or misheard - like Springstein’s Born in the USA or other songs I’ve written about. Is it wrong I get a kick out of imagining an audience happily singing along without thinking twice about the words?

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks

You’d better run, better run, outrun my gun

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks

You’d better run, better run, faster than my bullet

Metric - “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright (Bob Dylan cover)”

Today, Something for the Ladies kicks off Covers Week. It’s pretty self-explanatory; we’ll be posting some of our personal favourite covers. To start, I’ve chosen Metric’s cover of Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” because (1) Metric is one of my all-time favourite bands, and I’ve been looking for an excuse to post more of them despite the lack of new material (2) I think it illustrates what I believe a good cover is which is not a copycat of the original but a musician’s interpretation of the original artist and (3) damn, I love this track.
